- Give a Gift of Stock. Avoid capital gains taxes—Uncle Sam sad, RBCS happy.
Everybody wins when you make a gift of appreciated stock to the Russell Byers Charter School Fund, which is managed by The Philadelphia Foundation. By giving stock, you can avoid the capital gains resulting from a sale by contributing to a charitable fund. The Foundation handles all the administrative details.
Please contact Jodi Rosen, Development Officer (jrosen@philafound.org) or Keith Doughty (kdoughty@philafound.org) for assistance in transfering the proceeds of your stock sale to the Fund.
- Check with your employer about Matching Gifts. Finally a reason to crack open your company's employee manual.
Ask your employer to match your gift, and you'll multiply the value of your donation. Contact your human resources department to find out whether your company has a gift-matching policy. Then contact us.
- Give a gift of Real Estate or Life Insurance. Real estate isn't doing so hot right now anyway.
Donating a home or other property may save you capital gains tax. Naming the Russell Byers Charter School as the owner and beneficiary of your life insurance policy may secure you a tax deduction. If premiums are still due, your future payments may also be deductible. For more information, contact us.
- Remember us in Your Will. The old saying is true—You can't take it with you.
Remember the Byers School in your will or under a retirement plan. You can set up a living trust, make an outright bequest, or participate in one of a number of other ways to maximize tax advantages. By making the school the beneficiary of your retirement plan, you can avoid the double taxation of retirement benefits at your death. For more information, contact us.
- Contribute Goods or Services. Money is always appreciated, but we need "stuff", too.
During the school year there are many goods and services we need. You may be able to reduce the expenses of our annual budget while you receive a tax deduction. To discuss this option, contact us.
- Corporate Tax Credit. One of PA's best ideas ever—the Educational Improvement Tax Credit.
The Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) provides Pennsylvania companies with a tax credit up to 90% for contributions to non profit scholarship or educational improvement organizations. For information and a link to the appropriate form, visit Russell Byers Charter School Tax Credit Program.
- Donate through United Way.
The Russell Byers Charter School is now part of the United Way Donor Choice Program. Thanks to the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, it is now possible to make donations to our school via cash, stocks or payroll deductions, making donating easier than ever. RBCS's Donor Choice ID number is 42183.

New Tax Incentives
There are new tax incentives for rolling over traditional & Roth IRA contributions to charities. H.R. 4, the Pension Protection Act of 2006, was signed into law on August 16, 2006. This bill contains a two-year IRA Charitable Rollover provision that allows people age 70½ or older to exclude up to $100,000 from their gross income in tax years 2006 and 2007 for cash gifts made directly to a qualified charity. The gifts must be made by December 31st of each calendar year. For more information, please email Laurada Byers at lbyers@byerschool.org or call at 215.772.3053.
