Welcome to the Russell Byers Charter School!

The Russell Byers Charter School, a public elementary school located in the heart of Center City Philadelphia at 1911 Arch Street, opened for its eighth year on August 26, 2008, with 400 students from 37 neighborhoods. We offer 4K (Kindergarten for 4-year-olds) through 6th Grade, a student/teacher ratio of 22:1, and an innovative hands-on academic program, Expeditionary Learning.

RBCS Improving Test Scores
As reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer on April 13, 2008, RBCS is listed in "Schools in the Region with Improving Test Scores" for both 5th grade math and reading.

Lottery
The lottery for the 2009-2010 school year was completed on December 12, 2008. At the present time, we have large waiting lists for each grade and are not accepting applications. Enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year will commence in October, 2010.

Founders' Vision

The Russell Byers Charter School provides a rigorous education that cultivates self-assurance, love of fresh ideas, and especially, a sense of joy. Our students are creative problem solvers, powerful communicators, and knowledgeable and responsible citizens. They will develop the character and gain the academic skills to truly make their lives and their world better.


Principles in Action

Mayor Nutter came to school to address the students at an All School Meeting. He stayed to read Corduroy by Don Freeman to the 4k and 5k students.
